Pro: Foam-Free Florals are Better for Our Health

Floral foam contains many toxic chemicals that can irritate the skin on contact and once the wedding is over it goes in the landfill, breaks down into microplastics and leeches into our oceans. Choosing an eco friendly florist that uses foam free mechanics for their designs is a lot better for our planet. If you’re worried that certain designs cannot be achieved without traditional form, there are several new inventions (like Agrawool and The Oshun Pouch) that make any design possible while remaining free of harmful chemicals.

Pro: Helping Support Local Vendors

Choosing a local eco friendly florist who sources from local farms will do good things for your karma!

1: It will support at least two local businesses (florist and flower supplier)

2: It will reduce any carbon emissions that would have resulted from having your vendors or flowers flown in.

Even a long car ride from another town can be avoided when sourcing local vendors.

Pro: Spray-Free Florals are Safer

Most commercially grown flowers are sprayed with numerous chemicals; from pesticides to keep the bugs away, to preservatives to make them last long periods of transportation. This is especially harmful if you’re going to incorporate florals into your wedding cake or dessert. Choosing sustainable, local flower growers allows you to choose spray-free flowers, so you don’t need to worry about you or your guests ingesting a chemical cocktail.

Con: Specific Flowers

If your favourite flower is native to your area then you would need to make sure that your wedding date coincides with its flowering season. If your favourite flower does not grow locally then it would have to be flown in from a large, commercial supplier in another country, like Mexico, but, if you are flexible about the specific flowers then going green should be no problem for an experienced eco friendly florist who can choose the right flowers to fit your style and colour palette.

Con: Cost

Sometimes using small, local growers & innovative plastic-free mechanics for wedding floral designs can cost a little bit more. Of course, here at Happily Eco After we think that paying more for quality & sustainability is worth it.
