How to Choose the Best Décor
for Your Wedding

fresh and bright wedding decor

When it comes to choosing your wedding decor, there are so many elements to think about. From color palettes and textures to patterns and themes, the options are endless. But with so many different styles to consider, it can tough to know where to even start.  Here are some expert tips on how to choose the best decor for your wedding.

Research Your Style Preferences

The first step to picking the perfect wedding décor is to find out what your likes & dislikes are when it comes to wedding décor. Do you prefer a rustic style or do you like a glam, luxurious look? Would you rather have lots of natural elements in your décor, or would you prefer it to be as minimalist and modern as possible? In order to figure out what works best for you, it’s helpful to do a bit of research and look at examples. When thinking about trends, imagine looking at your wedding album 20 years from now… will your wedding décor be timelessly elegant or a trend that came and went? For this reason, a lot of brides choose to go for a timelessly elegant look while keeping trendy décor to a minimum.

Venue

If you’ve already picked a venue, there must be some style elements present there that appeal to you. Is the space large and bright or warm and cozy? Did they include rustic or modern elements? It’s an easy direction to go with the aesthetic of the venue and then add elements of your own style and pieces that are meaningful to you and your partner (think guest table, dessert table, arbour, or floral installations).

Start with Neutral Colors and Texture

Neutrals are the perfect place to start as you’re getting your feet wet. You can choose neutral colours like white, ivory, and blush. Additionally, you should also stick to textures that are soft and light, like chiffon or linen. With these two key guidelines in mind, you can begin finding decorating ideas that will work well with your taste.

Pair Soft Tones with Bolder Colors

The next step to finding the perfect decor for your wedding is choosing colors that complement each other. A good way to start is to pick out soft pastels or grays and go bold with colors like yellow, orange, burgundy or black. If you’re having a daytime wedding, then this will be a great starting point for your color palette. For nighttime weddings, you can play with brighter colors like turquoise or blue.

Celebrate the Season

Some couples choose to celebrate the season by incorporating Christmas or fall-themed decor into their wedding and reception. Festive colors and textures can help set the mood for a winter wonderland and if you choose to include autumn colors and textures, it will help evoke a warm, cozy feeling. And what better way to celebrate the season than with some themed décor!

Break It Down

Separate the different areas of the ceremony and reception and then look for inspirational photos of those particular elements and different ideas for wedding decor.

Will your Ceremony be in front of an altar, a natural background like trees or fireplace? You can look up wedding ceremony ideas for that particular setting and choose whether you’ll want Crescent Moon, Circle or Triangle Arbour, Floral Pillars, a classic Arch or tall arrangements.

You can search ideas for the dessert table (that’s a really fun one with donut walls, macaron towers or even crepe carts as some of the many possibilities). Guest Table and Main Table will have lots of options as well so if you search for those terms and add your style keyword (for example, “Modern Guest Tables”), you should get some sweet ideas!

Organize

Now that you have your different looks decided on, you can create a few Pinboards or Moodboards (get a free template here) to organize the different areas and their looks. Separate them into different categories/moodboards like this:

  1. Ceremony
  2. Reception
  3. Attire
  4. Guest Tables
  5. Dessert & Gift Tables
  6. Sweetheart or Main Table

It will make it that much easier to order the decor pieces (we always recommend renting as a cost-effective and eco-friendly option) and have all your decor figured out and planned!
