How much do wedding flowers cost?

I see this question come up a lot in the online world, and I want to dispel some of the mystery around what is a realistic wedding budget and how much people spend on florists for weddings. So I am happy to share prices to help clear some of the confusion that many brides feel while they’re trying to gather all the info they need to plan their wedding.

You can see some design examples with their price tags in the video below; to learn what is an average budget for wedding florals and some more examples of what wedding flowers cost, read on.

How much of my wedding budget should be flowers?

Here are a few examples of average wedding budgets needed for different wedding sizes.

Micro to Small

If your wedding taste is very minimal and you just need Personals (what we in the industry call bouquets, boutonnieres, corsages and floral crowns) then $1200 would probably be enough for your wedding flowers. Again this is affected by variables like, how many bridesmaids you have, whether you prefer premium/out of season flowers and of course, the size & fullness of the bouquets. For example a cascading bridal bouquet (avg price $400-500) costs more than a regular bridal bouquet (avg price $250-300).

Medium to Large

Now, if you want to add centrepieces for about 10 small guest tables and something pretty for the main table, plus florals for the arch or arbour, then you would need a budget of $3500-5000 given the arrangements are not very large and the arbour florals are minimal.

If you love the look of big full arrangements with compote vases or cascading table florals and lush flower arches then you’re hopping over to the $4000-7,000 range. Double that again if you have a very large venue and you’d like to have 20-foot aisle markers and large-scale installations, i.e. 10-foot hanging floral clouds. To put it into perspective: some large weddings for luxury clients can go up all the way to $50,000 and more for their wedding flowers cost.

Other Fees

There are fees that go on top of the specific costs of the floral designs that are added to the final quote/invoice. These fees include:

Creative Design

This is the spot for the florist’s secret sauce. Each florist has their own style, favourite flowers, vessels & mechanics to use. They use all those faculties to come up with the creative designs, their floral recipes & the mechanics needed to make them. This process can take many hours depending the number of the designs & their complexity. Some florists charge a flat fee, some include it in their floral prices and some use a percentage like 10-20% of the total.

Labour

Labour constitutes the amount of hours needed by the florist’s team to prep & condition the flowers and then turn them from raw material into finished pieces. The average price for labour is 20-30% of the invoice. So if the florals added up to say $3500 there will be an additional line item of $700-1050 for the labour needed.

Delivery

This is usually a flat fee that varies from florist to florist and can include mileage for travelling to and from the venue.

On-Site Hours

When we need to install arbour florals or arrangements, or a baby’s breath cloud hanging from the venue’s ceiling it could take about 2-4 on-site hours.

Taxes

This varies from location to location, but yes, flowers & florist services are taxable items.

Wedding Florals are a Luxury Commodity

Flowers are a precious commodity; the fact that their beauty is so perishable just makes them more precious. So much hard work goes into growing them, especially if following organic practices. Each florist’s creativity and style are valuable as well,  their brilliance, talent and experience all play a role in how they work and the unique artistic creations they produce.
